Google reader no more from 1st July So —– NOW WHAT?
Yes! I was devastated when I heard the news, how can these silly buggers do this to me? HOW DARE YOU?
I went into panic attack mode and started blowing up paper bags by the hundred (like in the movies) and with my dogs lying buried under a mound of paper, I stared at my screen in bewildered shock. Yis! Bunch of Wallies!
Slowly, at first, my mind started to defrost from its Google induced stupor and though, still dazed, I started to grapple with the problem. “When in doubt, Google it or restart” is the answer I get from my ex resident now only visiting occasionally Geek techy, after he sarcastically said “So what?”. “SO WHAT!” I screech the stupid bums have or are going to cut off my water and lights and you say “SO WHAT” thanks very much!
“Take a chill pill Pops” he says “google RSS readers and choose a new one. Easy peasy!”
Mumble, grumble, groan and a little bad thoughts, I start on my quest.
At this point you need to understand that I haven’t a clue what RSS even means.
Home page, search, rss readers, and guess what, there must be hundreds of the things.
Sh–! I don’t know where to go or what I’m doing and start to reach for more brown paper packets. After regaining my breath I enter best rss reader and guess what? IT SAYS GOOGLE! I kid you not GOOGLE says the best reader is Google. HA! IT’S SHUTTING DOWN YOU BUNCH OF SCHMUCKS, I screech!
Struggle sweat, mumble curse and so on and on I go, not having much of a clue until I spot NETVIBES and try it.
VOILA! I can manage it from the get go. “Take that Google, Geek and all the other crappy readers that only confused me more.”
So if you’re looking for an rss reader where you can read all the blogs from wordpress, blogspot, tumblr and elsewhere plus news, twitter and facebook, all in one place, look no further, simply go to www.netvibes.com/
Goodbye Google reader, I don’t need you anymore!

I was stunned too at the news Google was pulling the plug on Reader
Did a bit of a look round for an alternative and found feedly.com which I’m trying out now. So far seems to do everything Google reader does and the clincher for is that i give it permission to access my Google reader account and it pulls all the rss feeds I had set up there without me having to subscribe to them again in feedly. You might want to give it a try and see if it suits your needs
Thanks for the tip about netvibes. I’ll have a look at it when I get home tonight
Thanks, I looked at feedly but I couldn’t understand it for some reason. I also need to have separate folders for sport, blogspot, wordpress, twitter etc. Netvibes will also import from google or wordpress etc
Like you I haven’t a clue what RSS is. I just hope I will get the normal email notification when someone has posted a blog.
I find that email swamps my normal email and I tend to lose things. This way if I don’t read blogs for a day or so I don’t have to wade through hundreds of emails to find more important stuff.
You can also import all your Google Reader stuff into your WordPress Reader – wordpress gives instructions, I will see if I can find the link
Thanks but I don’t like the wordpress reader. I need to be able too split my reader into files for sport, wordpress, news etc
You are smart!
I’ve heard about Google Reader and the same reason you give for using it but I haven’t a clue whether I should spend time to investigate. I suppose I should try WordPress as mentioned but haven’t the patience to slow down to learn about something new right now. Even if it might be good for me.I appreciate your sharing, Roly.
I just find it easier to do it this way so it doesn’t interfere with my emails.
Super! Thanks for the information!
Er … what is Google reader? Guess I won’t be missing it seeing as I’ve never used it … I don’t think.
Glad you won’t miss it. Always use what works for you
I don’t generally use the reader – only time I go in there is to change the frequency I get e mails.
Glad you got it sorted Sar
It’s the emails that bug me too. I have split my reader into categories for easier reading too. FYI people that comment, like or reblog etc. I follow more than I can read daily so I start off with those who comment then sport then as many others that I have time for.
Thanks for the tip, Roly.
Works great for me
Seems as soon as somebody gets something on the internet which really works and which you start relying on, they scrap or change it. Happened a few times to me – apart from 24. com & LD, there was the pre-FB Scrabble, and some of the music storage programmes. AAAAAAAAAARGH!
Well, of course I’m sorry that you had to suffer a meltdown for this but I’m also equally pleased. I keep seeing this RSS thingy on blogs other than wordpress and had no idea what it was about. I also had pretty much no idea how to follow non-wordpress blogs. Your near mental breakdown has now answered questions for me and I can hopefully get into a better place myself.
Give it a try. I will help if you get stuck
I went with Feedly because it has apps for my phone and Kindle. I read a bunch of blogs at work on those so it was a necessity. Still not as good as Google Reader but what can you do?
Thanks Jeff, The only thing I don’t like about feedly is where the mini menu pops up. Netvibes button appears in the browser toolbar for one click subscriiption. Works for me
